Nimona Review

Title: Nimona
Author: Noelle Stevenson
Publisher: Harper Collins
Genre: Fantasy, Graphic Novel

Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren't the heroes everyone thinks they are.

But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona's powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

Me: THE FEELS ARE SPILLING OVER MY HEART AND ONTO THE FLOOR. Wowowowowowow. Quirky, adorable, hilarious, and all around amazing.

The Ups: I am not a fan of graphic novels whatsoever. I don't really like the briskness and how fast they fly by because it feels hard to soak everything in. And I am not a big fan of fantasy unless it's Harry Potter or Throne of Glass. So I would never have picked up this book by myself, but my book club picked it for this month...and I'm so GLAD!

The drawings are absolutely stunning. They capture the essence of the characters so well, and I loved the feel to them...a little Rainbow Rowell-y, if I do say so myself. I am obsessed with the style of the drawings, the color scheme, the humor and dialogue...it all just really created a bond between me, the reader, and all of the characters in such a short amount of time.

Nimona is the heroine, a shapeshifter that can turn into anything she wants.
(see what I mean...you fall in love with the style)
She's also determined, lovable, and fierce...and has had a turbulent past. But she is hiding a secret to make sure she can stay with Lord Blackheart. I don't want to spoil too much, but let's just say this book gets deeper than just a story about a wonderful girl and her boss. It's about true friendship, accepting people for who they are, and realizing everyone is a person, no matter what.

AND THE EPILOGUE. Oh my heart. Oh my poor poor heart. It is gone. I think that ending was right next to Eleanor and Park's for the Most Bittersweet Ending Ever.

The Downs: IT WAS SO SHORT. Just kidding. I think it was a perfect length to tell the story...but I need more from this author NOWWWW.

Overall: Even if you don't normally enjoy graphic novels, give Nimona a chance. She deserves it.

Rating: 5 kisses!

  1. Oh my god, the FEELS! It's been a while since I read this (I read it when it first came out last year) but my heart still hurts! I'm so glad you got the chance to pick it up and read it, it's so GOOD. You're completely right about how the art style and the humor and even color scheme all work together so well in making the reader love this. Now I'm kind of dying to reread this actually, I need my heart torn out again. =)

    Great review!

    1. YES, someone UNDERSTANDS!! My heart was shattered. My absolute favorite graphic novel of all time, and I can't believe art in book form can have that much power over a person :)
